On the Grand Strand, hurricane season brings an often-overlooked side effect: a surge of pests. Heavy rain, flooding, and wind don't just threaten your home directly, they drive displaced pests indoors looking for dry shelter and food. A little prep before and after a storm can spare you a second problem once the skies clear.
Why storms push pests inside
When ground floods and habitats are disrupted, pests flee to higher, drier ground, and your home is an obvious target. Ants relocate entire colonies to escape rising water, rodents seek dry shelter, and roaches and other insects pour in through any available gap. The displacement can bring pests you don't normally see.
Fire ants and floodwater
Fire ants are a notorious storm hazard. When flooded, entire colonies link together into floating rafts of live ants that ride the water and can wash up against, or into, homes and yards. After flooding, be cautious around any debris or standing water where these rafts may have landed.
Before the storm
Prep pays off: seal gaps around doors, windows, and utility penetrations; clear gutters and improve drainage so water moves away from the foundation; move firewood and debris away from the house; and secure food and trash. A home that's already well-sealed gives displaced pests fewer ways in.
Standing water is the aftermath threat
The biggest post-storm pest issue is mosquitoes. Floodwater and pooled rain become massive breeding sites within days of a storm, so draining standing water, buckets, tarps, clogged gutters, low spots, is the single most important cleanup step for pest control after a hurricane.
After the storm
Once it's safe, inspect for new pest activity, drain standing water promptly, and address any moisture intrusion that can draw termites and roaches.
