Mosquito & Tick Control
Take back your backyard from mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and ticks with targeted barrier and misting treatments.
Learn about Mosquito & Tick ControlHeavy rain is the trigger here. Flood the mulch beds and the storm drains and palmetto bugs walk in through pipe collars and sill gaps, almost always after dark.
The strip carrying Garden City Beach down to the Murrells Inlet estuary sits about twenty-two miles from Conway, and calls here follow the rain rather than the calendar. American cockroaches, palmetto bugs to everyone local, live outdoors all year in the bark mulch around foundations, inside water meter boxes and down the storm drains along US-17 Business. One hard afternoon downpour floods those spaces and the insects head for the nearest dry void, which is normally the gap where a supply pipe or an air conditioning line set passes through a wall. In the marsh-side neighborhoods that gap hides behind a skirting board or under a deck. Work here therefore begins outside: pulling mulch back off the siding, sealing pipe collars, clearing weep holes, then baiting the harborage instead of chasing individual insects across a kitchen floor at midnight. Ground-level storage under a raised house is the other place they gather, since it stays dark and holds damp cardboard for months at a time.
The pests here are not random. These are the local conditions behind most of the calls we take in Garden City.
Because Garden City is largely stilt-raised rentals and low marsh-side houses with services run through open under-floor space, the same few weak points come up job after job: the seal around the air conditioning line set, the gap behind an outdoor tap, and the joint where a porch slab was poured hard against the wall.
Anywhere close to the Atlantic Ocean and Murrells Inlet, expect slow-draining sand and a damp space under the floor. Palmetto bugs, silverfish and spiders follow that moisture up into the house, so treating them without drying out the crawl space only books the same visit again.
Summer storms drop an inch here in twenty minutes and the sand only takes so much, so the drain lines and mulch beds flood and empty several times a season. Every stage has a window where treatment does the most good, and hitting that window is the difference between ending a problem and repeating it.
Because of the Garden City Pier, non-residential work is steady around Garden City. Roaches travel between units through shared plumbing chases, so treating one unit on its own rarely holds and the building gets handled as a whole.

Bark beds and irrigation boxes around the parking areas fill with water in a storm, and the insects in them walk to the nearest building.
Water backing up behind the strip floods the low drain lines, and that is when palmetto bugs go looking for a dry wall void.

Because the places they normally shelter fill with water. Mulch beds, meter boxes, drain lines and hollow blockwork all flood at once, and the insects move to whatever void stays dry. A house with unsealed pipe collars and mulch banked against the siding is the easiest option on the street, which is why one neighbor gets them and another does not. Two dry weeks and the same house stops seeing them almost entirely.
Not on its own. These are outdoor insects making short trips inside, so an indoor spray only meets the few that already got through. The population stays out in the mulch, the meter box and the drain. Treating that exterior harborage and closing the entry points is what cuts the numbers, with indoor application used only where there is evidence of breeding. Numbers fall away over two or three weeks rather than overnight.
Pull bark mulch back four to six inches from the siding and keep the layer thin. Lift stacked pots, boards and firewood off the sand. Point downspouts away from the foundation, and fit a collar or sealant around every pipe and cable entering the wall. None of that is glamorous, and it does more than an extra treatment would. Meter box lids and irrigation valve boxes are worth a look too.
