Chiggers control in Conway, SC
The itch that arrives late

Chiggers and Red Bugs in Conway Yards

Late spring through early autumn, worst in warm humid weather

Short answer

Nobody feels a chigger. Itching starts hours after you came indoors, clustered at the sock line and the waistband, which is why the blame lands on fleas, mosquitoes or a new laundry detergent. They are the larval stage of a tiny mite picked up in tall grass, pine straw and field edges, and Clemson is clear that they neither burrow into skin nor feed on blood.

First clues

Signs to look for

If you have seen any of these, the problem is already established.

Itching that starts after dinner

A delay of a few hours between being outside and the onset of itching is the classic pattern, and it is the main reason the cause gets misidentified so often.

Welts along the sock line

They attach around hair follicles where clothing holds tight to skin, so bites gather in a band at the ankle, the waist or a cuff rather than spreading evenly.

Only one person in the household affected

Usually the person who was in the overgrown part of the yard. It points at a specific patch of ground rather than anything happening indoors, which is where fleas would be.

It followed weeding or clearing brush

Kneeling in weeds, clearing a fence line or working in pine straw puts skin against the vegetation where the larvae wait. The activity is the diagnosis.

What makes local properties attractive to them

The habitat is everywhere here. Chiggers wait on vegetation in damp, shaded, overgrown ground, and Horry County offers unlimited quantities of it: weedy ditch banks, field edges out toward Aynor and Loris, pine straw beds around almost every house, brush at the back of a lot, and the unmown strip between a lawn and the woods. Because the larvae need humidity at ground level, our long humid season keeps that vegetation suitable for far more of the year than a drier climate would.

Yard habits then decide who suffers. Pine straw is the default landscaping mulch here and it holds exactly the damp, shaded ground layer they favor, especially in beds along the north side of a house. Lots backed by woods, unmaintained neighboring land, or a section that only gets cut a few times a year all produce local hotspots. Meanwhile the middle of a regularly mown, sunny lawn is essentially useless to them, which is why the problem is a boundary problem rather than a whole yard problem.

Conway yards back up to the same brushy margins found a drive away in Carolina Forest, where the wetland preserves off River Oaks Drive and the Carolina Bays Parkway keep undergrowth damp and chigger larvae waiting shin-high for a host. Socastee shares that pattern too, its tree lines off SC-544 doing the same work. The licensed pros we connect you with treat these edges directly rather than the whole lawn, since that's where the bites actually start.

Chiggers favor shady, humid ground that never fully dries, which describes the wooded lots around Conway just as well as it does spots well outside town. Forestbrook's pine woods and the creeks and wetlands nearby hold that same moisture, and the marsh-side neighborhoods around Garden City and the Murrells Inlet estuary see heavy exposure too, since chiggers cluster wherever grass meets brush. The licensed pros we connect you with focus on those transition zones, not the open lawn, because that's where people actually pick them up.

The same job gets done in Carolina Forest, Socastee and Surfside Beach, and everywhere else we cover around Conway.

How to identify it

Size
Clemson puts the larva at about 1/128 inch, effectively invisible without a lens
Stage
Only the six legged larval stage bites; later stages feed on other small invertebrates
Where they wait
Tall grass, weedy edges, pine straw, brush piles, shaded overgrown ground
Season
Late spring through early autumn, worst in warm humid weather
Typical treatment
an estimated $89–$189

Commonly confused with

Flea bites and poison ivy. Location and timing separate them. Chigger bites cluster tightly where clothing fits close, at the sock line, the waistband, behind the knee and under a bra strap, and the itch begins a few hours after being outdoors rather than immediately. Flea bites tend to be lower on the leg and scattered, and there is usually a pet involved and flea evidence indoors. Poison ivy comes up as a line or streak of blisters following where a plant brushed the skin, and it develops over a day or two rather than within an afternoon.

How the work is done

Treatment is deliberately narrow, and that is what makes it worth doing. There is no case for blanketing a lawn, so the work goes onto the specific ground that supports them: the unmown transition strip, weedy fence lines, brush at the back of the lot, shaded pine straw beds, and the paths and play areas immediately next to those. An inspection walks the property with the household's account of where and when people were bitten, because that history usually identifies the patch faster than any sampling method.

Cultural work does at least as much as product. Mowing the transition strip short, cutting back weeds and brush, thinning shaded ground cover, raking out and reducing deep pine straw close to walkways, and letting sunlight into a damp corner all make ground unsuitable rather than merely treated. Where a residual application is used it targets that vegetation and gets repeated through the season, since new larvae keep hatching in warm weather. On a large or heavily wooded lot the honest advice is to treat and maintain the parts you use and accept that the far corner will stay chigger ground.

The split with chiggers is simple enough: something contained gets treated once, while pressure arriving from outside every season is what cover is for. There is no winter here that resets it.

The homeowner side of this

Prevention here is cheap and immediate, and that is unusual. Before going into tall grass or pine straw, use an EPA registered repellent, tuck trousers into socks, and choose long sleeves for brush work. Afterwards, shower promptly with soap and put the clothes straight into a hot wash and dryer, since larvae still on skin or fabric can be removed before they attach. Do not bother with nail polish on the bites, because there is nothing under the skin to smother. On the yard side, mow the edges, cut back weeds, thin dense pine straw around walkways and let light into shaded ground. What is worth outsourcing is a repeated boundary treatment and diagnosis on a lot where you cannot work out which patch is the source.

Health and safety, in plain terms

The bite reaction is the whole issue, since these mites do not transmit disease to people in this country. Clemson notes that they pierce the skin near hair follicles and feed on liquefied tissue rather than burrowing in or drinking blood, and that the larva may stay attached for around three days. The itching can be intense and last well over a week. Wash the area with soap and water, use a cold compress and an over the counter anti-itch preparation, and try not to scratch, because a broken, infected bite is the realistic complication rather than anything the mite carries. Spreading redness, pus, fever or a reaction well beyond the bite sites is a reason to see a doctor.

Before you ring round

Work on chiggers generally falls in an estimated $89 to $189 band. How long it has been going on decides most of the rest. The inspection is free and the scope goes on paper before any work happens. The pricing guide carries the full bands and what shifts them, and the work itself falls under Yard & Lawn Pest Control.

What else turns up in Horry County homes

Roof Rats

A climber, not a burrower. Noise overhead at night on this coast usually means a rat that climbed rather than one that dug.

Black Widow Spiders

The one spider here worth respecting. Almost every spider in a Conway house is harmless, and this is the exception that earns some care.

Smokybrown Cockroaches

Comes in from above, not below. This is the other palmetto bug, and it has a completely different address.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Are chiggers under my skin?

No. Clemson is explicit that chiggers do not burrow into the skin and do not feed on blood; they attach at the surface near a hair follicle and feed on tissue broken down by their saliva. That is why painting bites with nail polish achieves nothing except sealing in a mess. Washing with soap and water removes any larvae still attached, and after that you are treating a skin reaction, not an infestation.

Why does it take hours to feel anything?

The larva is minute and the feeding is painless, so nothing registers at the time. The itching is your immune response to the saliva, and that takes a few hours to build. It is the reason people connect the bites to whatever they did indoors afterwards, and it is also why the useful preventive step is a prompt shower and a hot wash of clothing rather than anything applied later.

Can they infest my house?

No. They need vegetation and moisture and they cannot establish indoors, so there is no chigger nest to find, no carpet treatment needed and no need to launder the whole house. If bites keep appearing with no outdoor exposure, the likelier culprit is fleas, and that is a different investigation entirely.

Do I need the whole lawn treated?

Almost never, and it would be a waste of money. Chiggers concentrate in damp, shaded, overgrown ground, not in the sunny mown middle of a lawn. Treating the boundary strip, weedy fence lines, brush and shaded pine straw beds near the areas you use, and keeping those cut back, is both cheaper and more effective than blanket application.

Will treating the yard stop bites straight away?

Bites already itching will run their course for a week or more regardless, so judge the treatment by whether new bites appear after subsequent trips outside. Reduction usually shows within a week or two on the treated ground, and it holds better where the mowing and clearing were done alongside the application rather than instead of it.
