Learn about Mosquito & Tick ControlStorm season brings the Litchfield Beach wildlife calls. Wind opens the roofline, rising water moves animals off low ground, and a warm attic is what is left.
Litchfield Beach runs along US-17 on the Waccamaw Neck about thirty-three miles south of Conway, backed by salt marsh and tidal creeks. From August into October the wildlife side of the work takes over. A tropical system lifts ridge caps, pulls a soffit return loose and pushes gable vent screens in, while water rising through the low ground moves squirrels, raccoons and rats off it at the same time. The roof space of a villa is dry, warm and quiet, so that is where they go, usually through damage nobody has been up to look at yet. Long low rooflines with plenty of valleys give a falling limb more places to land and open something up. The sequence that works: get the animal out, screen and repair the opening, then clear the nesting material and whatever it left in the insulation. Screened pool enclosures take a beating in the same weather, and one torn panel lets everything from wasps to rats treat that space as sheltered ground.
Knowing why pests turn up here is what makes treatment hold. These are the factors we look at first in Litchfield Beach.
Most of Litchfield Beach is low-pitched resort villas and patio homes with long rooflines and vented attic space. Whatever the age, the recurring theme is the line where the building meets the sand. Slab edges, pier footings and skirting panels all give subterranean termites a sheltered route up out of the soil, and not one of them can be seen from a room indoors.
Storm water is the thing to watch near the Atlantic Ocean and the Waccamaw River. When a tropical system pushes water across the low ground, rodents and roaches move to whichever building stays dry, which is why the calls arrive in the days after the rain rather than during it.
Named storms track across this stretch from late summer into October, and the wet two weeks afterwards is when the roof and attic calls come in. Work is planned around that sequence, so the yard treatments and the structural side both land when they are actually worth paying for.

Long villa rooflines with plenty of valleys catch falling limbs, and a lifted ridge cap is all a squirrel needs.
When water rises through the creeks, the animals living on that ground have to go somewhere dry, and buildings are nearest.

An inspection of the roofline from outside and the attic from inside, to find the opening, work out what is using it and whether young are present. Removal comes next, then the repair, in that order, because sealing a hole with an animal behind it creates a far worse problem. Nesting material and soiled insulation get cleared as part of the same job. Attic wiring gets looked over at the same time for chew damage.
They were already working the roofline. Squirrels and roof rats patrol gutters, valleys and soffit returns constantly, testing anything loose, so a lifted shingle or a bent vent screen gets found within days rather than months. That is also why these calls arrive in the two weeks after a storm rather than while it is passing over. One loose vent screen will do it, with no storm damage required.
It is the cheapest thing you can do on a villa here. Rescreening gable and ridge vents, refixing a loose soffit panel and cutting back the limbs overhanging a valley takes one visit and removes most of what a storm would otherwise exploit. Set against an attic clearance and replacement insulation afterwards, the arithmetic is not close. A pre-season visit also leaves you photographs of the roofline as it was.
