How to Get Rid of Palmetto Bugs (and Why They're Not Just Roaches)

Few things clear a Lowcountry kitchen faster than a palmetto bug taking flight at 11 p.m. They're a rite of passage for anyone new to Conway, and a constant frustration for longtime residents. But understanding what a palmetto bug actually is, and where it comes from, is the key to keeping them out.

So what is a palmetto bug, really?

In the Lowcountry, 'palmetto bug' usually means the American cockroach, and sometimes the smokybrown cockroach, the large reddish-brown roaches that can grow well over an inch and, yes, fly. They're roaches, just the big, mostly-outdoor kind rather than the small German cockroach that infests indoors. That distinction matters, because it changes how you control them.

Why they come in even when your house is spotless

Here's the part that frustrates people: palmetto bugs mostly live outside. They breed in mulch beds, wood piles, tree holes, sewers and drains, and damp crawl spaces, then wander indoors looking for moisture or just wandering in through a gap. Cleanliness helps with indoor German roaches, but it has little effect on palmetto bugs, a spotless home right next to a mulch bed will still get them.

Why our climate makes it worse

Conway's heat and humidity let palmetto bugs stay active and breeding for most of the year, and the same conditions draw them toward the cooler, damper spaces inside your home. Summer is peak season, but along the coast they never really disappear the way they do in colder regions.

What actually keeps them out

Because the problem starts outside, so does the solution. The effective approach is treating the exterior harborage around the home, sealing entry points (gaps around pipes, doors, weep holes, and the crawl space), and reducing moisture that draws them in. Interior treatment of cracks and voids handles the ones that wander in, but the exterior work is what makes the difference.

DIY steps that help

You can reduce the pressure yourself: keep mulch and wood piles away from the foundation, fix leaks and improve crawl-space drainage, seal gaps around utility penetrations and doors, and keep gutters clear. These won't eliminate an established population, but they make your home far less attractive and make professional treatment last longer.

When to call a pro

If you're seeing palmetto bugs regularly, or spotting them in daylight, there's harborage close to the house that needs treating. A professional exterior barrier plus entry-point and crawl-space work knocks the pressure down fast, and recurring service keeps it there through our long warm season. Conway SC Pest Control targets exactly the outdoor harborage that store sprays miss.
