Come spring, homeowners across Horry County notice clouds of winged insects, or little piles of shed wings on a windowsill, and immediately wonder: ants or termites? It's a great instinct, because the difference matters enormously. One is a nuisance; the other can mean thousands of dollars in structural damage. Here's how to tell them apart.
Why they swarm
Both ants and termites produce winged reproductives that leave the nest in large numbers to mate and start new colonies, usually in spring for termites. Seeing a swarm indoors is significant: it means a mature colony is nearby and reproducing, often within or right against your structure.
Look at the waist
The easiest tell is the body shape. Ants have a pinched, narrow 'waist' between the thorax and abdomen. Termites have a straight, broad body with no waist, more like a grain of rice with wings. If the body has a clear pinch, it's an ant.
Look at the antennae and wings
Ants have bent, elbowed antennae; termites have straight, beaded ones. And while both have four wings, a termite's are all the same length and often extend well past the body, while a flying ant's front wings are noticeably longer than the back pair. Termites also shed their wings readily, hence those little piles.

In coastal South Carolina, termite swarmers indoors are a red flag worth acting on immediately. Our climate makes subterranean termites highly active, and a swarm inside usually means an established colony is already feeding on the structure. Flying ants are far less serious, though carpenter ants can still indicate a moisture problem.
