Why the coast keeps them going
Fire ants slow down in hard freezes, and the Grand Strand simply doesn't get many. Our sandy, well-drained soil warms quickly, our winters stay mild, and rain keeps the ground moist, ideal conditions for colonies to keep foraging and even relocating through months when northern populations would be dormant. That means mounds can appear or flare up in almost any season here.
Why they're more than a nuisance
Fire ants aren't just annoying, they're a genuine hazard. Disturb a mound and hundreds of workers boil out and sting in unison, leaving burning welts that blister. For small children, pets, or anyone with a sting allergy, a mound near the play area or back door is a real safety concern, not a cosmetic one.
Why knocking down mounds never works
The classic mistake is treating one visible mound at a time. A mature fire ant colony can hold hundreds of thousands of ants and multiple queens, and disturbing it just causes the colony to relocate, often splitting into several new mounds. As long as the queens survive, the colony rebuilds.
What actually clears a yard
Effective fire ant control works on the whole property, not one mound. The proven approach combines a broadcast bait that foraging workers carry back to the queens, collapsing colonies from within, with direct treatment of active mounds for a fast knockdown. Together they clear existing colonies and suppress new ones for an extended stretch.
